Why You Should Know Your Industry Inside & Out
This post has been inspired through recent personal reflections.
In a previous design role, I was working for a small design agency but I always aspired for bigger things. Now, in my currently role, I am still a designer but I have so much exposure to other areas. This means that I have a broader knowledge to the industry as a whole and not just my one area.
No matter what industry you work in, it is very unlikely that you will have nothing else at all affecting your role. So whether it’s easily at your fingertips or something you need to research yourself, get to know your industry as a whole. Knowledge is power at the end of the day. If you know what affects your job role, you will be able to work with this in mind, hopefully foreseeing any implications and avoiding them in good time.
Being able to liaise with other people from the industry and have an understanding of their role is also a key skills to have. Not only will you instantly look more experienced and somewhat impressive, it will allow you to easily communicate any issues with a sense of understanding.
Finally, it will increase your chances of employment for three reasons:
You will look experienced if you can clearly demonstrate a well rounded knowledge of your industry.
You will be able to discover and/or apply for jobs you may not of known existed previously.
It will show you are clearly proactive and excited to learn information above and beyond what is expected of you in your day to day role.
You dont need to spend all the hours the sun gives us researching, try and ask people you work with about various aspects of their role (without bugging them too much) or look a job descriptions for a breakdown of job titles and responsibilities.
We hope you will be learning all there is to know about your industry, remember, you can never know too much!
